Sports Leaders Basic Expedition Leaders Certificate
Level 3
Tamworth District is now registered for the Sports
Council to run BEL Courses
The BEL Course currently running in Tamworth District has been well
supported by staff from Staffordshire Young People's Service and staff
from partner organisations in the district including Landau Forte
Academy and The Boys Brigade.
The Course is being run over a number of weekends; the second weekend
has just been completed at Beaudesert Camp in Cannock Chase. Topics
covered included: navigation, nutrition, access, camp craft, weather,
and leadership. Cannock Chase is an ideal venue as navigation is demanding
in forested areas. The weather at the weekend was mixed with some
showers and sunshine, the nights were cold and all woke up to a frost
with ice on the outside of the tents.
The next weekend in November is a "mini-expedition" where
candidates will carry all their equipment and put into practice the
skills learnt over the last few months.
On successful completion of the BEL certificate candidates will be
qualified to take groups walking and camping in areas within the BEL
remit. They will also be able to teach and assess the bronze award
of The National Navigation Award for which the Tamworth District is
an accreditted provider.
