The Tamworth Two

The “Tamworth Two” sculpture depicts the now famous Butch & Sundance – two Tamworth Sandy back pigs who went on the run from an abattoir in Somerset in 1998. Thanks to a variety of funders the young people & centre staff were able to work with Anthony Hammond during the Easter holidays to create a lasting sculpture to be installed in the gardens at Tamworth Youth Centre. We are grateful to the Staffordshire County Council – Local Members Initiative which funded a large part of the costs, Tamworth Borough Council – Arts Grant Scheme and The Conservation Foundation funded by O2 who also supported the project. We are also grateful to Alex Thomson of Industrial Coating Services who coated the sculptures in anti – graffiti coating free of any cost.

The pictures below depict the various stages of the process from the steel frame to the completed sculptures. The structure involved the use of cement, glass fibre and various other products to produce a depiction of the “Tamworth Two” leaping to freedom.

A number of members and staff spent an interesting & creative 4 days during the Easter Holidays.

There are already plans for a further project, also involving the theme of “pigs” but these will be flying pigs made out of copper sheet & wire and will be mounted at high level on the outside of the building. This new project will form part of the activities for the annual Study Support Summer School which is operated jointly between QEMS and the centre and is funded by The Children's Fund via Tamworth Borough Council.

If you would be interested in further information regarding these projects please contact the Centre.
